Essential Woodworking Tools for Beginners

You don’t need a full workshop to start woodworking. Here is what actually matters in the beginning.

One of the most common reasons people put off woodworking is the belief that they need a garage full of expensive machines. In reality, a small set of reliable tools is enough to build dozens of useful projects. Buy tools as projects require them, not all at once.

Measuring and Marking

  • Tape measure – a 25-foot tape covers almost everything.
  • Combination square – for marking square lines and checking 90-degree angles.
  • Pencil or marking knife – a sharp line leads to an accurate cut.

Cutting

  • Hand saw – inexpensive and surprisingly capable for small projects.
  • Circular saw – the most versatile first power saw for straight cuts in boards and sheet goods.
  • Jigsaw – useful for curves and cut-outs.

A miter saw is a great upgrade once you build many projects with angled or repeated cross cuts.

Drilling and Fastening

  • Cordless drill/driver – for pilot holes and driving screws.
  • Clamps – you can never have too many. Start with four bar clamps.
  • Wood glue – often stronger than the wood itself when joints fit well.

Sanding and Finishing

  • Random orbital sander – saves hours compared with hand sanding.
  • Sandpaper in several grits (for example 80, 120 and 220).
  • Finish – stain, oil or a clear protective coat depending on the project.

Safety Equipment

  • Safety glasses
  • Hearing protection for power tools
  • Dust mask or respirator

Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for every tool.

How to Use This List

Pick a first project, check which tools it needs and buy only those. A good plan will list the required tools and materials up front, which makes budgeting much easier. If you want a large library of plans that include tool and materials lists, see our TedsWoodworking review.
